Joker in the pack

When Adam Rix decided to fly the Love Creative nest, he felt that a 'duplexed, Colorplan, super-diffuser foil-blocked card' just wasn't him. We caught up with Adam to find out more...

What was the reason for printing on playing cards?
To start with, I was looking for a cheap option. I'd just gone solo and I didn't have buckets of cash - but I still wanted to produce something memorable. I wanted to do something more unexpected than the usual 'foil-block onto some nice stock' approach. Plus, nice stock is expensive, and this is a nice take on recycling. I wanted my card to be a bit of a talking point when I handed it over. The only downside I've now realised is that nobody's happy with just one. I generally have to give them 3 or 4...

How did you choose which playing cards to print on?
I went through phases on this. At points I thought tacky cards would be good, the sort with 'fish of the world' on, and ones for various royal marriages. Then I started to get excited by old 50s and 60s cards with beautifully airbrushed women on, and it kind of went from there. They had to be old, but not tacky. I also shied away from anything with too complex a pattern to be wary of legibility.

Where did you get the cards from?
The cards came from Ebay, car-boot fairs, and old junk shops. I was particularly keen to get some glamour cards in there, although these took me massively over my budget in a moment of auction madness. Stumbling across a lot of 1934 assorted horse cards on Ebay was a real high point.

Which processes did you use?
Just foil blocking. I separated the cards into 4 piles, and each pile was foiled in one of 4 colours.

It's a simple idea, nicely executed with a nod to recycling and the ability to raise a smile. What more could you want from a business card?
